iPhone 4 Email Bug: Personal Domain Deleted Email Problem Solved!

This morning, I starting working on my iPhone 4 and noticed a very strange occurrence.  My Gadgetblurb account was unable to delete emails.  It is hosted at Bluehost.com and my email address here, which is where most of my twitter and emails I receive from the blog come.  I was trying to delete some of them and got the following message you can see on the screenshot on the right.   The reports are just starting to trickle in that this a bug on the Apple forums as other users are reporting this as well.  I can fully replicate this, but only with my privately hosted email addresses.  This does not work with my emails hosted with me.com, gmail, or Exchange.  What is going on is that when I have my emails set to delete to the trash on the iPhone, it is not working correctly.  So, the fix?  Below are some screenshots that solve the problem.

First, go into the mail settings.

Then Go to the account you are hosting in the private email domain.

Then click on the account info…

Then click on Deleted Mailbox…

Then you will select the appropriate box on the server.  This is the important part.  You will be changing the setting from the iPhone to the server.  Your setting may say “deleted messages” or like mine, “Trash”.  Whichever is appropriate, you can choose it.  What this is doing is telling your iPhone to place your messages in the Trash folder on the server immediately instead of holding them on the iPhone for the default amount of time, which is usually 1 week, as you can see from the screenshot above.  It is very important that you back arrow two to select DONE! Which will tell the phone to enable this action.

Now you can delete emails to the Trash or Deleted Messages folder on the server immediately and not get the warning!!!

I did find another really weird thing.  I went back and reset the settings after deleted 2 messages to the server Trash to “delete to iPhone Trash” and it began working again! Now my email is working properly and my emails are deleting to the iPhone trash and will (hopefully) delete in a week.  I deleted the account and reset it up, and put the emails back in the inbox.  Re-deleted them and the same problem occurred.  Once I set the setting to server, deleted a few emails, then re-enabled the trash to iPhone, it started working again.  WEIRD!!!!

So, give it a try and see what happens.

The url “support.apple.com” provides a posting dated December 18, 2009 which recommends what you suggest, but then incorrectly states that after the reset to “trash on the server” one presses the Home button! I did this several times. Nothing worked.

Then I found your posting stating the obvious: one must back through the “advanced” sub screens by tapping “account”(twice). At the main account screen, as you note, one must tap “done” to enable the settings. Terrific. Simple but easy to miss. Thanks so much.

Thanks for the post Alan, it is surprising that Apple hasn’t made the gmail integration not only easier, but utilizing push technology as the main selection. There are a ton of other bizarre quirks when it comes to gmail on iOS devices. The deleted email bug is one of many. Glad I could help!

Question — if you do this, does it delete e-mails on the server?

Meaning, if I get an important that I want to delete off my phone, but I want to make sure it will still download on my work computer…will it still make it’s way to my work computer, or will it be gone once I set my phone up this way?

I believe there is a setting that allows you to leave messages on the server and setting it up so that when you trash messages, they only are trashed on the phone. The Google page has a ton more information on it under Google Sync for Iphone.

What if the email account is not a google account?

It should work with any Exchange, Imap, pop or any other email protocol. Let us know!

Thanks! I spent an hour on the phone with Apple and they couldn’t help with this problem. Seems to be working now!

Yes, it is a very strange but, but once you move the trash to the server, it clears up.

Would you please address the antenna problems and the proximity sensor problems?

    Thanks for the advice
It worked perfectly for about a week but since then, it reverted back to server after displaying the above error that it could not send to trash.

    Annoying!

That is strange AJ, it still works for me. What you can do is keep the deleted preferences on the server and you should be good to go.
